About Barbara Stroer
I am a resident of Bluffton, South Carolina, and am surrounded by the abundant subject matter of the marshes, ocean, animal and plant life. The scenery here is so amazing. I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to start the day with a walk by the ocean where I can collect shells to be used in my shell work, or which I can use as source material for my paintings. I enjoy watching the egrets, herons, and the occasional alligator that linger on the neighborhood ponds.I am excited to be a part of it, and to paint it.
I was born in Birmingham, Alabama and educated at the University of Alabama. I received a BFA in studio art and a MA in communication. I began my art career as a ceramic sculptor, moved on to graphic design, and finally to teaching art in both elementary and high school. I have lived and taught art in several states from Alabama, to California, to Illinois and to Florida. After more than twenty years of teaching, I am currently happily retired and producing art. Nature is a huge influence, and the organic shapes find their way into my work. Coming from a watercolor background, I am fascinated with the fluid qualities of water. The accidental moving and flowing of the paint make up a large part of my work, either as a background for sea life and nature paintings, or as stand alone abstract work.
